Transmission & Differential Service / Repairs

De Jonge Mechanical Repairs can service, repair & recondition differentials from all makes & models of vehicles.

Differential

  • Differential Leaking?
  • Got Differential Problems?
  • Differential Making Noise?

The differential is the mechanical component that spins both left and right wheels, but lets them rotate at different speeds so that the vehicle can make turns.

When a vehicle makes a turn, the outer wheel has to turn faster than the inner wheel, due to the difference in the length of the paths they take. The differential is located between the two wheels, and is attached to each wheel by an axle shaft. Four-wheel drive vehicles have a separate differential for each pair of wheels, connected through a transfer case.

Have You Ever Changed Your Vehicles Differential Fluid?

Differential fluid provides lubrication to gears, shafts, bearings and other internal parts.  Heat, pressure and friction can slowly breakdown the additives in the differential fluid.  Small particles such as metal and clutch material may come off as they wear and these particles can then mix with the fluid.  The differential fluid can also become contaminated with water.

Whether your vehicle is front, rear or all-wheel drive, the vehicle's metal ring and pinion gears are meshing against each other every time the wheels rotate.  To ensure that these expensive metal components are well protected, it's important to have the differential fluid checked and changed at recommended intervals.

Automatic Transmission Service

Transmission problems may include slipping and not shifting into gear smoothly and sometimes the check engine light will appear.

A major automatic transmission failure can be quite costly to repair so De Jonge Mechanical Repairs recommend an annual transmission service to keep your vehicle in top running condition.

The Transmission Flush (Fluid Exchange) & Filter Change (if applicable) is the most comprehensive transmission maintenance service.  It is designed to remove old, degraded transmission fluid and replace it with fresh fluid to aid in prolong the life of the transmission.

De Jonge Mechanical Repair's Automatic Transmission Service includes:

  • A complete transmission & drivetrain inspection
  • Drain old transmission fluid including from out of the torque converter.  Some transmission fluid changes leave about 30% of the old fluid in the torque converter.
  • Removal of dirt, grit and abrasives that can damage the transmission.
  • Replacement of the filter or cleaning the screen.
  • Replacement of the used pan gasket.
  • A thorough inspection for leaks.
  • Refill with new transmission fluid that meet or exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations and disposed of the old oil in an environmentally conscious manner.

Manual Transmission Service

There can be many issues with a manual gearbox that you need to keep in mind.  As soon as you hear a strange sound or the clutch or gears 'feel' different, then it's time to check things out.

Some of the symptoms include:

  • Hearing noises such as a grinding or rattling noise when the clutch pedal is all the way up or engaged.
  • A rattling noise that sounds louder in neutral.
  • Loud grinding or whining noise continuously while running
  • If the transmission works and sounds well, but is hard to shift into gear.
  • When the gear shift handle is sloppy.
  • Difficulty to get into gear without a grinding noise.

De Jonge Mechanical Repairs Manual Transmission Service includes:

  • Manual Transmission fluid level is check for manufacturer's recommended fill level.
  • Performance inspection.
  • Drain the old manual transmission fluid
  • Refill with new manual transmission fluid that meet or exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations and disposed of the old oil in an environmentally conscious manner.
  • Perform external adjustment if necessary.

The manual transmission system is a lot simpler than in comparison to its automatic cousin.  The gears are located along parallel shafts inside the transmission housing.  Power flows when gears are meshed.  During gear changes, or when the vehicle is stationary and the engine is idling, the clutch is used to interrupt the flow of power from the engine to the transmission.  If you are experiencing issues, the symptoms are similar to the automatic, and include: slipping, grinding of gears, hesitation, bucking and difficulty shifting.  The manual transmission requires a simple drain and fill of the transmission fluid.

De Jonge Mechanical Repairs recommend that the manual transmission fluid be changed every 40,000 kilometres.  This is because the transmission fluid provides lubrication to gears, shafts, bearings and other internal components.  Heat, pressure and friction can slowly breakdown the additives in the manual transmission fluid and contamination occurs over time as the synchronisers, bearings and gears in the transmission wear out. The resulting metal particles then float around in the lubricant.  Oil with microscopic particles of metal in it does not lubricate as well as clean oil, so if these contaminants are not drained out, they will shorten the life of your transmission.
